The dogs at a BSFA meeting are grouped in classes according to their age. You don't need to know your dogs class as it will be automatically assigned based on their date of birth. The class is mainly used to determine the Best in Class awards but there are a couple of differences in some classes.
Dogs in the Puppy Class (Class One) run solo and will only run half of the course. This is so that they can get used to focussing on the lure before they have the distraction of another dog running with them. They only run half the course so that they are not put under too much stress before they are fully developed. This policy was adopted based partly on information in the document Why Puppies Should Not Be Raced Too Young (PDF, opens in new window). They compete for Best Puppy In Field but not Best In Field.
The Veteran Class (Class Four) is for dogs over the age of 7. They have the option to run solo. We do not have a maximum age limit, it is up to the owners and dogs to decide when or if they want to retire.
The classes are:
- Class 1 or Puppy Class. For dogs over 12 months old but under 18 months.
- Class 2. For dogs between the ages of 18 months and 4 years.
- Class 3. For dogs between the ages of 4 years and 7 years.
- Class 4 or Veteran Class. For dogs over the age of 7 years
For class purposes, the dogs change class the day after their relevant birthday. We do not make exceptions for dogs which are only a few days, or even one day off, this date.
